What you love about working for yourself: There are two major things I love about being my own boss. The first is simply that I never have to fight to get my ideas heard or convince a boss to do things my way. My ideas stay my ideas. I run my business the way I want, I use the language I want to use and I write about what I want. The people that read my blog are only people who relate to me and find my useful. I never have to pretend and I can run my business freely and easily in terms of sticking to my personality. The second thing is the freedom of my lifestyle. Right now I’m based in New Zealand after living in London for six months after leaving Manhattan. Sure, I don’t get to travel as much as I would if I were here on holiday, but I’d never see as much of the world or experience as much in my personal life were I stuck in some 9 to 5. Plus, some days I start work at 7am, sometimes at 10am. Sometimes I stop work at noon, sometimes I work until midnight. The freedom of my daily life is worth the stress of running my own business.

What aspect of entrepreneurship do you most struggle with: Part of doing what I do means I’m never really off the clock. There’s always work to be done and when I do take time off for myself there’s always a part of my brain that says, “you could be writing a guest post,” or “you could be fixing your LinkedIn profile.” There’s always more that can make my business better and since it’s just me right now that work never really goes away. On top of that, it’s hard working in an “office” right next to my bedroom. It makes it hard for me to ever turn off.

Are you a member of a coworking space? If so, what are the benefits? I’m not, but just looking at the photos of GPCW is making me yearn for a more collaborative environment and making me wish I had some sort of office space outside of my house. New Zealand doesn’t have free wifi so working in coffee shops are out of the question. There have been a few partnerships I’ve had in the past and “work dates” I’ve been on that have me convinced coworking is the best way to not only get anything done, but to fix the entrepreneurial struggle I have of never turning off. I’d gladly pay good money to be in a community of likeminded people in a space that’s not my boyfriend’s old bedroom.

If you could share a desk with any two people in the world, who would you choose? Why? Elizabeth Gilbert, because she just seems totally adorable and really creative and chatty; and Marie Forleo, who is always coming up with something new and I think would be a huge motivator in terms of desk sharing ;-)
